In the past, only a small group of gamblers have been diagnosed with a gambling disorder. However, today, there are many more people with gambling disorders, especially among adolescents. This is due to increased availability of online gambling and sports betting, as well as easier access to legalized casinos and lotteries. Additionally, gambling is increasingly incorporated into video games and children’s toys, making it accessible to even young kids who may not know the difference between winning and losing.

Some studies have found that gambling can be a good way to teach certain skills, including pattern recognition, critical thinking and maths. It can also be a social activity that can improve teamwork and interpersonal relationships. However, it’s important to remember that the odds are always against you, and the house will ultimately win.

It’s also important to consider the role that culture and family values can play in your or your loved one’s gambling habits. For example, if you come from a family where it’s considered taboo to lose money, this can affect your ability to recognise that you have a problem and seek professional help.

While there are a number of ways to manage your gambling habit, the most effective is to make a firm decision to stop and stick to it. This means not going back to your old ways and taking a step back from the action to gain perspective. It’s also important to set realistic goals for yourself and to be honest about your progress. If you do have a relapse, take note of what caused it and try to avoid similar triggers in the future. If you find that you’re struggling with a gambling problem, seek the help of a therapist who can provide cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help you overcome your issues.
