Ships in the Navy are named according to type.

Seaplane Tenders are ordinarily named after bodies of water of the sound variety.  The USS Norton Sound was named after Norton Sound, Alaska, an inlet some 200 miles long in western Alaska, north latitude 63 to 65, west longitude 161 to 166. The City of Nome, Alaska, lies on the northern shore of the Sound.
